A 22-storey mixed-use building could be constructed in Railway Terrace, Milton should a development application from the Brisbane City Council be approved. This was according to the Development Application received by the Brisbane City Council from real estate company Locale Apartments Pty Ltd in January 2019.
Based on the DA A005100760, the proposed structure at the 27-33 Railway Terrace, Milton will consist of 143 apartments across 12 levels. The units will be a mix of single-bedroom, two-bedroom unit, and three-bedroom units. It will have a publicly accessible bar at the rooftop.
Brisbane-based Kris Kowalski Architects is in charge of designing the mixed-use structure.
Plans sent to the Brisbane City Council show the building will have green spaces like Kowalski’s previous projects. The landscape plan suggests the structure will be surrounded by planters for shade or canopy trees, shrubs, groundcovers, creepers, and vines.
The property is located around 110 meters away from the Milton Railway Station. It is surrounded by restaurants, hotels, and learning centers. It is a five-minute walk to parks like the Milton Park, Frew Park, and Dunmore Park.
Retail and commercial tenancies will be on the ground level while parking and smart apartments will be on the second. There will be car parking for more than 240 cars and bicycle parking for 230 bikes. The third and fourth levels are for short-term accommodations. The rest will be for the hotel and apartments.

The former Lyceum Theatre, the first purpose-built silent movie theatre in Brisbane, is now called Hillsong Theatre, the new home of Megachurch Hillsong.
Hillsong Church officially opened its new home in Brisbane’s CBD, in December 2018, at the iconic site on George Street. Before the takeover, the movie theatre, unused since 2011, underwent much needed renovations.
In April 2018, Hillsong Church announced that it will renovate the cinema “with the original look and feel in mind, and will retain a lot of the venue’s iconic features.”
“The church has outgrown many venues, after holding services in Brisbane City for four years, and it would be wonderful for it to have a permanent place,” said Pastor of Hillsong Queensland Steve Dixon. Across Queensland, Hillsong Church has seven campuses at Mt Gravatt, Downtown, Springfield Lakes, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast.

From April 2018 until its opening in late 2018, renovation works on the theatre kept as many of the original features intact as possible, such as the false balconies in the walls as well as restoring its original generator. What used to be a bright red exterior now sports a black colour with “Hillsong Theatre” replacing the old “Tribal” signage.

Opened in 1906, the former Lyceum Theatre was Brisbane’s first permanent picture theatre. Its ownership changed hands, gone through transformations, and name change several times throughout its history.

In the 1920s, the movie theatre was renamed Elite Theatre. In 1965, it was rebuilt and renamed as the George Cinema. The foyer features Roman-style statues and urns, and the auditorium had an Italian Renaissance design.

The Dendy Cinemas took over in 1994, turned it into 250- and 216-seating twin theatres, and operated it until 2008. The cinema was revived again by an independent operator in 2010 as the Tribal Theatre, showcasing arthouse, cult, short, and classic films at a cheaper price compared to other mega cinemas. Before it closed, the Tribal Theatre hosted the Brisbane International Film Festival in November 2011.
Despite efforts from the community, such as that from the “Friends of the Lyceum Theatre”, to relaunch and heritage-list the Lyceum Theatre, confirmation of Hillsong’s plans to turn it into a place of worship surfaced in 2017.
The Hillsong Theatre made its official opening last 21 December; and in keeping with their tradition, Hillsong Church will hold Friday night services in their new Brisbane CBD home.

More drinks inspired by classic songs under the Rhythm + Blues and Uptempo playlist are also on the menu.
Donna Chang boasts a respected team of industry leaders from both international and interstate origins. Their kitchen is spearheaded by Executive chef Jake Nicolson with Head chef Jason Margaritis. Queensland Police Memorial, a new memorial to honour the 147 officers who have died while on duty since 1861, has been opened in Brisbane’s City Botanic Gardens.
The Queensland Police Memorial would be a place of quiet reflection for all Queenslanders, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said during the dedication ceremony held 24 November 2018.

“While we dedicate this new memorial today, we also recognise no single monument can ever do justice to the enormous sacrifice of our fallen police officers,” Premier Palaszczuk said.
“Nevertheless, it’s important that we have a place which is solely in memory of the men and women who have tragically died in the line of duty.”
“These gardens opened only a few years before the Police Service was formally established in Queensland, so it’s an appropriate historic setting for a permanent memorial honouring officers from one of our State’s oldest and most important institutions.,” she said.

The old memorial was decommissioned in November 2016 to give way to the redevelopment of the lower end of George Street. Associated name plates were temporarily relocated to the Queensland Police Service Academy at Oxley.
Delivered by Urban Arts Projects, the final design incorporated various symbolic representations such as the five individual archways and 10 pillars, symbolizing the 10 ranks within the Queensland Police Service.
The archways represent the memorial ribbon that officers wear on each National Police Remembrance Day whilst the pathway connecting the archways emphasises that “no officer or affected family will stand alone”.

“Since our first officer was killed on duty in 1861, there are now 147 officers whose name appears on the pillars of this police memorial,” Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said.
“Our community is made safer every day by the men and women of the Queensland Police Service and it is only fitting to honour and acknowledge those who made the ultimate sacrifice in this way,” he said.

The Queensland Police Service funded the project together with donations from the Queensland Police Union, Queensland Police Commissioned Officers Union and the Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development, and Commonwealth Games.

As part of the $3.6 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development, work has started on the construction of Brisbane’s newest riverside public space. The project will transform the riverfront opposite South Bank.
Two barges are used to construct a 450-metre above-water pedestrian Mangrove Walk as well as a new public recreational area called Waterline Park.

Moreover, the underside of the Riverside Expressway is also getting an exciting mural makeover.
Work in Progress

According to Destination Brisbane Consortium Project Director Simon Crooks, the start of public realm works will significantly provide a highly visible series of activities along the riverfront.
“The first works will be to construct temporary river-based work platforms and prune the existing mangroves before we start to build the walkway,” Mr Crooks said.
“The Mangrove Walk will provide an alternative path from the Botanic Gardens to Queen’s Wharf, with interpretative heritage, integrated story-telling elements and additional mangrove plantings and a rejuvenation program in the area,” he added.

The river’s edge construction works will occur over the next 12 months to ensure that the Mangrove Walk and Waterline Park will be open in the second half of 2019.
“These will provide new public areas to enjoy along the riverfront long before the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development is expected to commence opening in 2022,” Mr Crooks said.
There is also an ongoing work in the Bicentennial Bikeway. It involves the upgrade of the first section of the bikeway to a dedicated 3-metre-wide bike path and the 2-metre-wide pedestrian path between the Goodwill Bridge and 1 William Street.

Furthermore, upgrades will continue to the bikeway across the full one-kilometre length of the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development.
Riverside Expressway Artworks
Destination Brisbane Consortium had appointed an independent panel of Queensland art community representatives to select artwork to feature throughout the precinct’s public spaces.

The panel has already selected the first art piece for the development. In fact, the colourful mural is currently being applied to the underside of the Riverside Expressway.
“Our panel chose the mural because it uses sub-tropical Queensland colours to portray the tidal changes of the Brisbane River, in a piece designed by Australian artist Alice Lang,” Mr Crooks said.
In addition, the panel will announce more artworks for the public space after their selection process.
Brisbane’s Newest Riverside Public Space
Waterline Park:
a 4,000m2 inner-city park that will enable a variety of recreational uses including:
outdoor exercise equipment
outdoor table tennis tables
shaded seating areas
grassed areas
subtropical landscaping
Mangrove Walk:
a 450m walkway from the Botanic Gardens to Queen’s Wharf Brisbane
the walkway will require 102 piles to enable construction of a pavilion, rest areas and crossovers. The piles will also support a cantilevered bikeway upgrade where original sections are too narrow to accommodate the 3-metre bikeway and separated 2-metre-wide pedestrian path.
1,300 tonnes of reinforced concrete will be used to construct the walkway, a pavilion, and five rest areas
83 pieces of concrete panels and girders will be pre-cast and sections transported by barge from Murrarie for installation
the walkway will feature:
an Indigenous message trail
an exploratory trail with educational installations and interpretive signage
a series of landings and lookouts with shaded seating nooks to enjoy the view
an elevated pavilion with views along Brisbane River
a launching facility for small non-motorised crafts such as kayaks and canoes
The new riverside public spaces will certainly transform tourism experience in the City. To learn more about the development, visit the official website of Queen’s Wharf Brisbane. You may also check their Facebook page for updates.
