XXXX Brewery Milton to Continue Operation, Secures 15-Year Registration Extension

The iconic and historic XXXX Brewery in Milton will continue to operate after it secured a 15-year extension of its current registration. The brewery will also receive protection from civil and criminal proceedings should neighbours complain about nuisance odour and noise.

The State Government has approved the registration extension, a move that it says will secure 150 local jobs.

“I have approved an extension to the current registration, under section 267 of the Planning Act, to allow the brewery to continue to operate,” said Minister for Planning Cameron Dick.

“While I don’t make these decisions lightly, my top priority as Minister is to secure and grow jobs in Queensland,” Mr Dick said.

“This 15-year extension will give certainty to the company, so it can continue to operate into the future within approved limits.

“More importantly, this decision provides certainty to the 150 workers at the brewery, and their families.”

In making the decision, Mr Dick recognises the part that XXXX played in the city’s history.

“This enables Lion to continue operating from the same premises that has been home to XXXX for more than 140 years, by ensuring that existing uses on the site can continue, even as the area experiences growth intensification,” he said.

Mr Dick also said that it is important to make sure that significant uses such as the XXXX brewery can continue to exist even with the resurgence in inner-city living.

“In more recent years Milton has seen an increase in new residential and commercial buildings and the urban encroachment registration is about confirming the expectations for the brewery and residents and tenants in the surrounding area,” he said.

The minister called the decision a balanced and reasonable outcome for all parties.

Addressing Environmental Impact Issues

Despite the extended protection, Ian Roberts, Lion Group’s Supply Chain Director, insists that the brewery is committed to reducing its carbon footprint.

Mr Roberts said that they have spent millions of dollars since 2009 to minimise the brewery’s environmental impact.

“Just a few weeks ago we completed a $2 million solar project, which will reduce our annual carbon emissions by 1260 tonnes,” Roberts said.

“We have also significantly reduced our already low noise and light emissions, all of which are well within the limits allowed under our development consents, in order to continue being great neighbours.

“20 years ago, Milton looked very different to how it does today. Previously it had been an industrial epicentre, but its proximity to the Brisbane CBD made it the perfect location for high-density residential developments” added Roberts.

Previously, XXXX Brewery Milton faced labour disputes as employees staged strikes as they worried about job security.

Milton Urban Common is part of Council’s commitment to keeping Brisbane clean and green, making the city livable and sustainable for future generations.

Depending on weather conditions, works are due for completion in September 2019. For latest updates on the project, visit the Brisbane City Council’s website.

According to Endometriosis Australia, some 730,000 Australian women experience endometriosis once their reproductive years begin. Diagnosis and treatments are often delayed by as much as 12 years since most women aren’t aware of the symptoms.

Endometriosis may be the reason for a woman’s painful menstrual cycle, excessive bleeding, pain during intercourse, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ovarian cysts. The symptoms vary per women and might sometimes be confused as part of the menstrual cycle. When left untreated or unmanaged, endometriosis could lead to complications like infertility issues or cancer.

New Brisbane Police Unit Launched to Safeguard Major Events

The Brisbane Region Major Events and Planning Unit has been launched in a ceremony held on 8 May 2018 at Suncorp Stadium for a better, safer, and more secure hosting of events in Brisbane.

Assistant Commissioner Peter Crawford was joined by Police Minister Mark Ryan in officially launching the new Major Events Planning Unit which combines the North and South Brisbane District resources, making it the largest planning unit in Qld.

The newly established unit will help the police provide better planning support to event organisers as well as work with the community and other partners to deliver safe events throughout the Brisbane Region with a strong focus on the City, Valley, and Riverside patrol groups.

As before, the new planning unit will ensure that sporting and other major events held in Brisbane are safe and secure for locals and visitors alike.

Assistant Commissioner Crawford particularly noted the 2018 Commonwealth Games that was held on the Gold Coast, Townsville, Cairns, and in Brisbane which he said highlighted QPS professionalism in supporting outstanding safe and secure events.

“The very experienced team in the Major Events Planning Unit will build upon those experiences, extensive local knowledge and well-developed relationships to ensure the Queensland Police Service can maintain a safe environment to host events in our growing and busy city,” Assistant Commissioner Crawford said.

“Development in the city and surrounding areas over the next few years will add new challenges for planners.

“I am confident the team working with our local and state Government partners is well placed to continue to showcase our beautiful city as we attract more and more events into the future.”

“Major events bring a lot of activity to our city, and this unit will ensure the safety of our community through the promotion of those events running smoothly,” Minister Ryan said.

“The more successful events we host here, the more likely they will become regular features on the Queensland event calendar, ultimately enhancing Brisbane’s growing reputation as a world-class event and tourism destination.

“The police who make up the Brisbane Region Major Events and Planning Unit will be able to continue demonstrating their abilities to meet stakeholder needs with upcoming events, as they implement their revised unit,” he said.

Queen’s Wharf Update: Construction Underway for Waterline Park

Brisbane is one step closer to having a new world-class entertainment precinct, with the major components of the Queen’s Wharf construction now getting started.

Top-tier contractor Multiplex has begun work for the building of Waterline Park and the Goodwill Extension area upgrade.

Multiplex won the contract for the development of the resort component of Queen’s Wharf. They will develop the main integrated resort’s facade, tower structures, 100-m sky deck, and a five-level basement car park.

The Brisbane CBD-based contractor will also work on the revamping of the 500-m stretch of the Bicentennial Bikeway from the Goodwill Bridge to the area behind William Street.

With the bikeway path construction and landscaping works being undertaken, a number of alignment changes should be done between 26 March and 31 May 2019. Reopening of the Bikeway is anticipated in late 2019.

Like the Bikeway upgrade, the Waterline Park construction is  expected to be completed by late-2019.

For construction notices detailing any work occurring outside the site boundary or outside normal hours, check out the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane Construction Page.

The $3.6 billion integrated resort development hopes to put Brisbane on the map as a tourism, leisure and entertainment destination.

As Queensland’s largest private single development, Queen’s Wharf is expected to bring in around 2,000 jobs during peak construction. Once operational, this resort is anticipated to create more than 8,000 job opportunities for Queenslanders.

It is being developed by Destination Brisbane Consortium, in partnership with The Star Entertainment Group, Far East Consortium, and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises.

In April 2019, Destination Brisbane Consortium buried a time capsule in the Waterline Park. It has various items that will be stored safely, until the time of revel in 30 years.

“We have deliberately chosen for this capsule to only be buried for 30 years so that many of the people who have contributed can hopefully still be here for when it is unveiled and they can reflect back on this event and reminisce about their contribution,” Project Director for the Consortium, Simon Crooks said.

The silent disco yoga class is happening on Wednesday, the 15th of May, at The Great Room of the hotel in CBD. Set for a 90-minute workout session, the class will begin at 6:30 p.m. but participants are expected to be at the W Hotel at 81 North Quay by 6:00 p.m.

Silent disco yoga is a unique experience because participants will be wearing headphones while they exercise. They’ll hear the music and the instructor’s voice crisp and clear through this headphone, thus cancelling any other noise that could distract their concentration. They may also adjust the sound settings to their preference

Participants of the silent disco yoga will receive swag bags containing healthy goodies, as well as healthy food and drinks during the sessions.

Tickets are at $55 each and you may book your slot online.

Works for Milton Urban Common Underway

Work has already begun this month to transform an empty block in Milton into a vibrant park that will be called the Milton Urban Common.

The new urban common park will be located at the corner of Manning Street and Railway Terrace, a parcel of land acquired by the Brisbane City Council in 2014 after the Milton Station neighbourhood plan was developed.

It will feature a swing to replace the table tennis table, an additional shade structure, public art, a drinking fountain with a dog water bowl, additional large tree plantings, and an increased garden space to reduce the amount of pavement.

These features were added based on community feedback and site investigations done in early 2018.

The new park will add to more than 2100 parks across Brisbane and will deliver a space that increases accessible green space. Other benefits of the project include promoting a sense of community and encouraging recreational activity in the city’s subtropical climate.

Depending on weather conditions, the construction should be complete by September 2019.
