Milton Weightlifting Coach Rory Scott Earns First Commonwealth Games Call-Up

Rory Scott, a Queensland weightlifter who trains and coaches at Milton Weightlifting Club, has been named in Australia’s 12-strong weightlifting team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow — earning his first Commonwealth Games selection after a breakthrough run in international competition.

Scott will take center stage at the SEC Armadillo on July 27 as part of the broader July 26–30 weightlifting schedule.

A club that punches above its weight

Milton Weightlifting Club, established in 2011 and based inside CrossFit Torian in Bowen Hills, is one of Queensland’s most active weightlifting clubs. It operates as a not-for-profit community organisation run by volunteers and has developed athletes from complete beginners to international representatives.

Scott is both a competitor and a coach at the club, running Wednesday morning sessions for members while preparing for his own international campaigns.

That dual role says something about the kind of environment the club has built — one where elite athletes stay connected to the community that shaped them.

How Scott earned selection

Queensland-born Scott lifted himself into the Australian team through an impressive 2023, adding 18kg to his clean and jerk record in a single season, a jump that announced him as one of the more rapidly improving lifters on the national circuit.

He has represented Australia internationally since 2023 and has steadily built the consistency required to earn a Commonwealth Games spot.

His Glasgow debut comes as part of a cohort of first-time Commonwealth Games selections in the Australian weightlifting team, alongside Isabella Andueza, Ryven Ewing, Nya Hayman, Ashley Kolomoisky, Chloe Perkins and Oliver Saxton.

The squad is anchored by history-making two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Eileen Cikamatana, who became the first woman to win Commonwealth Games gold for two countries in an individual sport when she dominated the 87kg event at Birmingham 2022.

Australian Weightlifting Federation CEO Ian Moir said the team had earned its place through a highly competitive qualification process. “This team has earned its place through a highly competitive qualification process and every athlete selected should be proud of what they have achieved,” Moir said. “Glasgow will provide a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to test themselves against the Commonwealth’s best.”

Weightlifting at Glasgow 2026 runs from Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 July at the SEC Armadillo, Scottish Event Campus. The Games run from 23 July to 2 August. Tickets and event information are available via commonwealthgames.com.au.
