A new community petition is calling on Brisbane to assess whether underutilised space at Frew Park in Milton could accommodate a dirt bike, BMX or pump track facility, following calls for a dedicated riding area for local children.

The petition, lodged through Brisbane City’s ePetitions platform, says children already use parts of Frew Park to ride their bikes after school, particularly students from nearby Milton State School. Supporters believe a purpose-built facility would provide a safer place for young riders while making better use of underutilised open space within the park.

According to the petition, Frew Park has become a regular meeting place for children who ride BMX bikes after school. The petitioner said young riders had previously built informal dirt jumps, but these were removed after they were told the work had not been approved.

Instead of unofficial jumps, the petition proposes an approved facility that could include dirt bike trails, BMX jumps or a pump track. Supporters argue that a designated riding area would provide a safe environment for children of different ages while reducing the need to travel longer distances on roads to access similar facilities elsewhere.

The petition also points to Frew Park’s location opposite Milton State School as one of its key advantages. It says many local children can already walk or ride to the park, making it an accessible destination without relying on car trips.

Rather than seeking immediate construction, the petition asks BCC to take several preliminary steps. It requests that Brisbane first conduct a site suitability assessment to determine whether underutilised open space within Frew Park could accommodate a dirt bike, BMX or pump track.

The petition also calls for a community consultation process involving local families and students from Milton State School. Supporters say community input would help determine the level of support for the project and identify design requirements for a potential facility.

In addition, the petition asks BCC to consider allocating funding in future budget planning for the design, construction and ongoing maintenance of an approved bike track if the proposal is found to be suitable.

The petition argued that a formal riding facility would provide children with a dedicated place to develop their riding skills away from roads and informal tracks.

Frew Park is already a well-used recreational destination, offering tennis courts, a playground, fitness equipment and open green space. Petition supporters believe a BMX riding area could complement these existing facilities while making use of sections of the park they consider underutilised.

At the time of writing, the proposal remains at the petition stage. Any future bike track would be subject to assessment, community consultation and future funding decisions before it could proceed.
