BrisStyle Hits King George Square For Twilight Markets

If you’re looking for award-winning handmade goods from Queensland and Northern NSW, then BrisStyle Markets is the place to be. This year, they are having the Twilight Markets in King George Square, as part of the Brisbane City Council’s initiative.

Just last month, this year’s first Brisbane Twilight Market was held in the area. It gave locals the chance to meet the makers. Aside from the handmade market stalls, there were also plenty of local food vendors, entertainment, and even a free Craft workshop.

The next schedules of the BrisStyle Twilight Markets will be on 7 September and 1 December from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m.

BrisStyle was established in 2008 by a small group of Etsy sellers. Over the years, they have grown, forming a bigger group of kindred spirits who have passion and love for creating local goods.

The Brisbane Twilight Markets is the only Brisbane-based marketplace that sells 100% locally handmade products.

If you are itching to get your hands on some locally-handmade goods, you can head on over to The Carseldine Markets for their Christmas In July Makers Market, in partnership with BrisStyle. It will on the 28th of July from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Entry to the event is free.

New Underground Station to Replace Brisbane Transit Centre in Roma Street

Dubbed as one of Brisbane’s ugliest buildings, the Brisbane Transit Centre located on Roma Street is set to be demolished and replaced by Cross River Rail’s new underground Roma Street Station.

According to Deputy Premier & Treasurer Jackie Trad, the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project would transform the western gateway to the City and facilitate the delivery of the proposed ‘Brisbane Live’ development.

“Roma Street Station is a key link between the city centre, Roma Street Parklands, Spring Hill’s schools, Caxton Street, the Petrie Barracks, Suncorp Stadium, and the cultural precinct at South Bank,” she said.

“When complete the new station is expected to be used by more than 230,000 commuters every week, the equivalent of over four capacity crowds at Suncorp Stadium,” she added.

Apart from the new underground station, Roma Street precinct will also have a new live entertainment venue. Plans for the Brisbane Live development are already underway following the government’s $5 million commitment to develop a business case for the entertainment precinct.

Ms Trad said, “Planning for Brisbane Live is well underway with representatives from AEG Worldwide visiting Brisbane from their Los Angeles base this week to meet with the local powerbrokers pulling the Brisbane Live business case together.”

“With an 18,000 seat world-class arena as its centrepiece, the Roma Street precinct, just like the LA Live complex, will become Queensland’s premier entertainment venue hosting major live concerts and world class sporting events right in heart of the city.

The business case, which had kicked off in May 2018, is expected to take approximately six months to complete. It will assist the Queensland Government in determining whether value-for-money can be achieved by developing the Brisbane Live proposal.

The business case will be prepared by Building Queensland and the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority (the Delivery Authority), which is responsible for the master planning work for the Roma St precinct.

Early works for the new Cross River Rail Roma Street Station will start in 2019, with the Brisbane Transit Centre and Hotel Jen to be demolished in late-2020.

Anzac Day Parade At King George Square

On 25 April, the Anzac Day Parade will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at King George Square to commemorate those who sacrificed and those who continue to serve the country.

Milton Brewery Workers Organize a Strike to Protest Against Management

Commonwealth Games risks losing XXXX supplies as the Milton-based brewery’s workers plan to walk off their jobs on Monday, the 26th of March to protest against job insecurity.

XXXX, a Queensland trademark,  is the official beer of the games, which begin on 4 April 2018.

Struggling brewery workers have been worried over job security as nearly a third of their workforce has been laid off during the past few years.

XXXX Brewery’s name stands for the traditional grading for strong beer, where the number of X’s indicates beer strength. It made noise in recent years due to providing insecure careers to its employees. Nearly 40 workers have lost their jobs.

The current workers are not going to let themselves suffer the same fate. Around 100 workers are going to strike just in time to threaten XXXX supplies on the much-awaited Commonwealth Games.

United Voice Queensland’s spokesperson Damien Davie has made it clear what the protest will be about.

“We want everyone to be able to drink XXXX while they’re enjoying the Commonwealth Games,” he said. “But management needs to come to the table, or they’ll risk disrupting beer supply at this important time.”

However, both Commonwealth Games’ and Brewery’s management are unbothered by the threat.

According to games chairman Peter Beattie, the organizers “have a lot of faith that XXXX will be able to provide.”

Brewery director Irene Bell expressed her disappointment over the strike. She claimed that it would not affect supply for the games.

She also brushed off the allegations that XXXX is being produced outside Queensland. “Let me say this again – XXXX was born here, it’s brewed here, and the brewery is not going anywhere.”
