Viking Cruises - When you want to escape Milton
Viking Mekong 5 Star all the way!
We had done most of the rivers in Europe with Viking so we wanted to try something new and different.
Our last Viking river trip was the Nile in Feb. 2020 and I thought nothing could surpass that trip but the Mekong did.
The entire trip was top notch all around, from the flights, the hotels, the food, the ship and the excursions.
Most importantly the guides for all 3 groups were excellent. We did the pre cruise extension to Halong Bay with Mr. Chung. He was easy to talk with and very knowledgeable about the history of Hanoi and Halong Bay. After our return to Hanoi he had arranged a street food tour that was optional. We took that and had a great evening walking around and sampling excellent foods at different small local venues from spring rolls to pho, ending with beer. Halfway through the tour we went to a water puppet show which was fascinating.
The next day Jan. 7 we started our real tour with our guide Mr. Thuyen. There were about 78 or 80 people on the trip and we were divided into 3 groups with Mr Chung, Mr Ut and Mr Thuyen. All 3 are Vietnamese but in Cambodia we were also accompanied by Cambodian guides who were all wonderful. Our guide Thuyen was very knowledgeable about the history of Vietnam and he was very balanced in his explanations about the Vietnam war and the US involvement.
We used all manner of transport, from buses, electric cars, tuk tuks, rickshaws and sampans. The execution on all excursions was flawless, The food in the hotels, at the restaurants Viking took us to and on the Saigon was great. The staff on the ship was always helpful and friendly. It was also the build up to the Lunar New Year on Jan. 21 and the flower markets were packed as were the streets with families getting ready for the celebration.
Vietnam is a very vibrant country and free enterprise is alive and well there. The guides are the most important element on any trip and we were very lucky to get to know the 3 that we had. This trip made me want to explore the part of Vietnam that we did not visit.
