September is always an exciting time in Brisbane as the three-week Brisbane Festival gets underway! As with the previous celebrations, this year’s event is stacked with fun attractions, entertaining performances, and unforgettable activities. 

But this annual event can be overwhelming with so many things to check out. To ensure that you won’t miss the best stuff, here’s a guide to the best Brisbane Festival shows you must see this year.

What: 26 Things You’ve Been Doing Wrong With Sam Simmons
When: 11th to 12th September
Where: The Tivoli at 52 Costin Street, Fortitude Valley

Mr Simmons is one of Australia’s most unconventional comics, so if you want to watch a comedy show with the most original ideas, you shouldn’t sit this one out.
What: Bitch on Heat with Leah Shelton
When: 17th to 21st September
Where: The Loft, QUT Creative Industries, Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove

If you want to witness performance art at its best, Ms Shelton’s show is going to pique your interest. Her act is confrontational and for mature audiences only, but if you want a show that doesn’t hold back, you’ll get your money’s worth here.
What: Briefs: Close Encounters
When: 11th to 15th September
Where: QPAC – Playhouse, Southbank

Featuring the Briefs boys, who have performed at London’s West End, this drag and burlesque show is simply unforgettable. They don’t just sing or dance but also do jaw-dropping aerial stunts. If you want to witness artistry and the beauty of the human form, you’ve got to see this spectacle. 
What: I’m a Phoenix, Bitch with Bryony Kimmings 
When: 18th to 21st September
Where: QPAC – Playhouse, Southbank

Ms Kimmings has proven that she’s the greatest show-woman in the U.K. She’ll share her personal stories and perform original songs at this insightful show. She’ll delve on how she managed a postnatal breakdown and the joys and pains of motherhood, which might not be entertaining subjects per se, but it’s different with Ms Kimmings on the stage
What: Yang Liping’s Rite of Spring
When: 25th to 28th September
Where: QPAC – Playhouse, Southbank

Mr Liping, a superstar choreographer from China, will captivate you with dance, along with 15 other dancers. No one does his kind of show in Australia, so it’s a definite must-not-miss. This will take your breath away.


What: Tivoli in the Round: No Mono
When: 18th September
Where: The Tivoli at 52 Costin Street, Fortitude Valley

Their unique sound will haunt you. It will leave you wondering how they make their music.  
What: Tia Gostelow
When: 21st of September 
Where: Treasury Brisbane Arcadia Cultural Forecourt, South Bank

Ms Gostelow won this year’s Queensland Music Awards ‘Album of The Year’ so it’s worth checking out her talent and music ability.
What: City and Colour
When: 28th of September
Where: Riverstage 59 Gardens Point Road

Dallas Green of City and Colour from Canada is leading the closing party of the Brisbane Festival with the best of Australian music — The Jezabels, Odette, Didirri and Asha Jeffries. A gorgeous fireworks display will cap off the performances.

Family Shows

What: River of Light
When: 6th to 28th September
Where: Treasury Brisbane Arcadia Cultural Forecourt, South Bank

You’ll clap, widen your eyes and leave your mouth agape as you watch this laser light spectacle. It’s a spectacle for both adults and children.

What: Fire Gardens
When: 11th to 14th September
Where: City Botanic Gardens, Alice Street

French artists will create wonderful displays of iconic landmarks using fire. They’re going to make fire dance as well that this show is going to be a feast for the eyes. 
What: A Not So Traditional Story
Where: 24th to 27th September
Where: QPAC – Cremorne Theatre, South Bank

Featuring Nathan Maynard, this puppet show centres on the adventures of Wurangkili, Timita and an alien. It’s a culturally rich performance that also touches on friendship and bravery to inspire a young audience.
