Most of Petrie Terrace could move out of the current McConnel electorate and join Milton, Paddington and Ashgrove under Queensland’s proposed new state electoral boundaries.
The Queensland Redistribution Commission has proposed transferring the bulk of Petrie Terrace from McConnel to Cooper, as part of a wider redraw prompted by population and enrolment changes.
The proposal would also rename McConnel as Brisbane Central and Cooper as Ashgrove.
Petrie Terrace Would Look West
At present, much of Petrie Terrace sits in McConnel alongside Brisbane City, Spring Hill, Fortitude Valley and New Farm.
Under the proposed boundaries, most of the suburb would instead become part of the electorate containing neighbouring Paddington, Milton and Ashgrove.
Not all of Petrie Terrace would move. The Commission’s proposal retains part of the suburb in the proposed Brisbane Central electorate, so the state electoral boundary would continue to divide Petrie Terrace.
Inner-City Growth Behind the Redraw
The Commission has identified enrolment growth as a key reason for changing McConnel.
In September 2025, McConnel had 42,427 electors, 5.57 per cent above the state average. Without a redistribution, it was projected to reach 53,664 electors by 2032, more than 20 per cent above the projected average.
Moving most of Petrie Terrace west is one of the changes proposed to bring the inner-city electorate back within the required enrolment range.
Not Final Yet
The proposed boundaries are not yet final, meaning Petrie Terrace residents remain in their existing electorates for now.
If adopted, however, most of Petrie Terrace would find itself electorally aligned with its western neighbours rather than Brisbane’s CBD and inner north-east.
