The Brisbane Broncos’ season hit another low on Saturday night, 1 August, as the Newcastle Knights punished a mistake-riddled performance to storm to a commanding 30-6 victory at Suncorp Stadium in Round 22 of the 2026 NRL Telstra Premiership.
Already under pressure after recent inconsistent performances, the Broncos were dealt an early blow when captain Adam Reynolds failed a head injury assessment inside the opening seven minutes, forcing Ben Hunt into the halves for the remainder of the contest. It was the first of several setbacks on a frustrating evening in front of their home fans.
Early Blow Rocks Broncos
The Knights wasted little time taking control. Fletcher Sharpe crossed inside three minutes after slicing through the Broncos’ defensive line before Dominic Young doubled the advantage just five minutes later, capitalising on another break down Brisbane’s edge.
Things went from bad to worse when Deine Mariner was sent to the sin bin in the seventh minute for a professional foul, leaving the Broncos to defend with 12 men as Newcastle piled on the pressure.
Although Brisbane survived the remainder of the sin-bin period without conceding again, handling errors repeatedly stalled any chance of building momentum. Grant Anderson, Kotoni Staggs, Patrick Carrigan, Ben Hunt and Mariner were among those unable to hold possession as the Knights continued to dictate territory.
Errors Hand Knights Control
The visitors extended their lead shortly before half-time when Greg Marzhew finished a sweeping movement to make it 14-0 at the break, leaving Brisbane searching for answers.
Any hopes of a second-half comeback disappeared within minutes of the restart.
Dominic Young again broke through the Broncos’ right edge before Phoenix Crossland backed up to score, stretching the margin to 20 points after Sandon Smith converted.
Walsh Sparks Brief Resistance
Brisbane finally found some reward approaching the hour mark. Mariner burst into space before sending Reece Walsh over for the Broncos’ only try of the night. Walsh converted his own effort to briefly reduce the deficit to 20-6 and lift the Suncorp crowd.
The momentum lasted only a few minutes.
Knights Finish The Job
Marzhew completed his double after another damaging line break before Fletcher Sharpe crossed for his second try late in the contest to complete the scoring. Smith added his third conversion from six attempts as Newcastle sealed an emphatic 30-6 victory.
The Broncos’ discipline also proved costly. Walsh spent 10 minutes in the sin bin after an incident involving Jermaine McEwen midway through the first half, while Mariner’s early professional foul had already left Brisbane chasing the game.
For Brisbane, the defeat was compounded by repeated handling errors that continually handed possession back to the visitors, preventing the Broncos from building sustained pressure despite flashes of individual brilliance from Walsh and Hunt.
Newcastle, meanwhile, delivered one of their strongest performances of the season. Sharpe, Marzhew and Young repeatedly found space out wide, while the Knights’ defence smothered Brisbane’s attacking opportunities for most of the evening.
